Welcome to Root & Roux!
Meet the Root & Roux Team!
Hello Garden Friends!
Time for an introduction!
Meet Georgia & Melanie:
About Georgia:
I grew up on a small West Texas ranch outside of San Angelo, where I watched my parents garden and grow tons of vegetables to share with neighbors, friends, and everyone at church. They also planted gorgeous gardens in their backyards that were magazine worthy and provided an amazing oasis out in West Texas for both pollinators and humans alike. Many years later, I appreciated their hard work so much, as my family bought our first home and with very little money leftover, I quickly started learning about how I could landscape it myself. I was bit by the gardening bug then and became obsessed with learning as much as I could while I cared for our newborn daughter. Quickly, I learned about landscaping plants, cut flowers, veggies and herbs. I have always enjoyed sharing small gifts with others, and growing flowers and veggies to share seemed like such a tangible and practical gift.
Over time, the dream for a flower farm began, and that dream came to fruition several years later when we developed a cut flower farm just south of College Station, Texas. We grew over forty different varieties of flowers and our fields expanded to 8 acres in production! Yes, it was a lot, but the joy of growing those blooms to sell to our local flower industry in the region and also community through our little flower shop was immeasurable. I loved every minute of it and there were many life lessons learned throughout the good, bad, and the ugly times with the farm that I will treasure all my life! My favorite top five favorite flowers are dahlias, garden roses, daffodils, tulips, bearded iris, but pretty much love all flowers and have many favorites!
About Melanie:
Melanie & Georgia met in early 2020 just before COVID shut down the country (or world). Melanie was a customer of Basecamp Farms and we were in contact from 2020-2022. In December of 2021, Melanie shared the vision for Root & Roux with Georgia and in early 2022 the steps began to bring the dream to life!
Melanie has been a long time gardener in Texas for the past 20+ years and also in Louisiana where she grew up admiring her grandparents and great-grandparents gardens. One of Melanie’s favorite past times is helping her great grandmother can and pickle things from the garden. Now, Melanie has large annual and perennial gardens on their homestead as well as chickens, cattle and pigs that they use to feed their large family. Melanie is committed to caring for the land and protecting the pollinators as best as possible. Melanie has three kiddos, two sons and a daughter, that she has loved teaching and sharing the love of gardening with as they get older. Melanie’s garden favorites include garden roses, tulips, daffodils, azaleas, all southern staples, pumpkins, sunflowers, tomatoes and peppers and just about everything she can. She is admittedly a late night seed and plant shopper and has more seed packages arriving than amazon boxes most days. HA!
Behind the Scenes Team of Root & Roux:
Gabby: Gabby is Melanie's sister, her expertise is in all things culinary. Gabby is especially focused on the edible gardens as she uses the produce for the gourmet meals that she whips up with no recipe in hand. Gabby also works in the garden and helps with quality control and product testing.
Hailey: Hailey is Gabby & Melanie's little sister and she is all things marketing, business and managerial. She is great at helping with aesthetics, product placement, inventory purchasing and management.
Cori: Cori is Gabby, Melanie and Hailey's little sister and her specialty is all things ART. Cori will be assisting in the aesthetics and in inventory purchasing.
Melissa: Melissa is Melanie's mom and is a wealth of knowledge in horticulture and has a passion for pollinators.
Melanie’s family is a big part of why she wanted to create Root & Roux, and it is a place for all of their creativity to flow whether it's behind the scenes or up front and personal.
Together, with the Root & Roux team, we look forward to sharing of our goals and dreams with you. Our mission is to educate and share practical tips and tricks we’ve learned to create our gardens here in Texas and Louisiana. We also plan to interview other experts in the horticulture field as well as host tours of botanical gardens and also other gardens throughout the South.
We thank you so much for following our journey!
